About

Juan Ramon Alvarez was born on February 18, 1973, to Juan and Lucy Alvarez. He entered the world in McKinney, Texas, but moved to Mercedes, Texas, as an infant, where he received his education up to the 12th grade. Both of his parents had to forego their education to support their families but later earned their GED. His father, a roofer in the construction industry, and his mother, who juggled roles as a factory worker and hairdresser, worked hard to make ends meet. Juan was also nurtured by his grandmother, Leonore Buenrostro, with whom he shared a close bond until her impressive lifespan of 93 years.

From a tender age, Juan accompanied his father to roofing jobs, experiencing the challenges of working under the scorching sun to contribute to essential bills and food expenses. Despite the physically demanding nature of construction work, Juan’s father harbored dreams of him becoming a lawyer. On the construction sites, budget constraints sometimes meant sleeping on the floor until payday.

Juan successfully graduated from Mercedes High School in 1991 and later from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1996. Throughout high school and college, he continued working in construction to support his family. In 1998, he embarked on his legal journey, attending law school and graduating from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in December 2000. Notably, he passed the bar exam on his first attempt.

His professional career led him to the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office, where he served as a prosecutor for two and a half years. Subsequently, Juan entered private practice, becoming a partner with his wife at Alvarez & Canales, PLLC. Additionally, he dedicated almost 15 years as Mercedes Municipal Judge and nearly 7 years as Weslaco Municipal Judge, showcasing his commitment to public service. With 22 years as a licensed attorney, Juan, and his wife Melisa, share their lives with three children and a household filled with rescued animals.
