CHARGED: Suspect in Wife-Stabbing, Officer Involved Shooting Faces Judge While Wearing Hospital Gown

WESLACO, Texas – A husband who stabbed his wife and was shot by police is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault of a public servant and evading arrest.

Wednesday, Jose Luis Sandoval, 53, was charged by Associate Judge Juan Alvarez while wearing a hospital gown. Sandoval had been hospitalized for a gunshot wound following a terrifying night according to his wife.

On Sunday, police say Sandoval attacked his wife with a kitchen knife and broke down a bedroom room door to “kill her”, according to his daughter who witnessed the violence.

Sandoval’s wife showed the cuts and deep slashes to her fingers are from where she held the knife blade.

She was stabbed on the left side, needed stitches to her hands and her eye was swollen shut. Monday morning when she allowed Local 23 into her living room where pieces of a blood splattered door rested against the wall. Outside their apartment, trash bags full of paper towels soaked in blood were ready to be thrown in the nearby dumpster.

According to Sandoval’s wife and Weslaco Police, a neighbor called 9-1-1 in reference to a domestic disturbance on February 2nd at around 11:00 PM. When officers arrived, Sandoval had fled in a white Chevy Impala.

“He left to go get a gun” said his daughter. Police said in a statement Sandoval lead officers on a vehicle pursuit. The suspect and police made their way back to the apartment on 800 Washington “As officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, he drove his vehicle toward officers at which point they discharged their service weapons in an attempt to stop the threat.”

Sandoval crashed into a tree, was taken into custody and hospitalized for a gunshot wound.

At this time, the officer-involved shooting is currently being investigated by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
